Letter before action template
A letter before action sets out what is owed or what went wrong, what you want, and by when — before any claim is started. Courts expect one to have been sent, and being able to show it was posted matters.
Free to use and edit. You pay only if you have it printed and posted.

Dear [name], Letter before action I am writing about [describe the matter briefly — an unpaid invoice, faulty goods, work not completed]. The facts are as follows. On [date], [set out what was agreed and what happened. Refer to any contract, invoice or order number.] Despite [describe your previous attempts to resolve it, with dates], the matter remains outstanding. I therefore require [state exactly what you want: payment of £[amount], completion of the work, replacement of the goods] within [14] days of the date of this letter. If I do not receive [payment / a satisfactory response] by [date], I intend to issue proceedings without further notice. That may result in a claim against you for the sum owed, together with interest and costs. I would prefer to resolve this without recourse to the courts and remain willing to discuss it. Yours [sincerely / faithfully], [Your name] [Your address]
